Peter Bonello, born on 3 July 1961, is a former windsurfer who made history by representing Malta in the Windglider event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he placed an impressive ninth out of 39 competitors, the best Olympic result ever achieved by a Maltese athlete. Beyond his Olympic success, Bonello remained active in the sport for decades, later moving to California where he continued to compete and excel. In 2004, he won the US Windsurfing National Championship in the Mistral Prodigy Class, dominating a fleet of 90 sailors with eight wins and three second-place finishes in 13 races. He also competed in the 2005 RS:X Pacific Coast Championship in San Francisco Bay, placing 11th overall among top-level international athletes, including Olympians and world-class professionals. Despite his professional commitments in aviation engineering and family life, Bonello has remained passionately involved in windsurfing, both as a competitor and as a prominent figure in Malta’s sailing community, including participating in events like the Malta-Sicily Windsurf Race.
