About Alfred Bencini

Alfred John Bencini was a sprinter who competed in the men’s 100 metres at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He also played football for clubs including Hamrun Spartans, Hibernians, Valletta F.C., and St George’s while studying at the Royal University of Malta. In 1939, he became a Police Inspector.He later served as Chief Welfare Officer on the ship Ocean Victory for Maltese emigrants to Australia and was promoted to Superintendent in 1956. In 1971, he became Commissioner of Police, retiring in 1973. He was married to Lucy Dei Marchesi Testeferetta Bonnici and had four children.
