Fifteen-year-old Kai Azzopardi became the youngest male to win a championship title when he won the National Duathlon Championships earlier on this morning. Hosted in Gozo, the race was marked with adverse weather conditions which made the course even more challenging. Racing against a field of experienced athletes, Azzopardi showed he was able to race in a tactical manner beyond his young age. Danica Bonello Spiteri, Azzopardi’s coach remarked that his result was all about him being open to learning and listening to guidance, as well as his regular commitment to training. It all augurs well for the future. In the women’s category, Lara Buttigieg and Krista Kuusijarvi had a tight battle until Buttigieg’s mountain bike experience gave her the edge on the bike in the wet and windy conditions, allowing her to take the lead, which she held till the end.
