Citius, Altius, Fortius. It is what every athlete strives for in their athletic pursuit. Day in day out. Athletes perform to go faster, reach higher and achieve stronger results. We often see individual athletes shine, like Usain Bolt, Simone Biles, Eliud Kipchoge and Katie Ledecky who are stars in their respective fields. Yet, their talent alone is not enough to make them win gold. We often fail to look beyond the athlete and recognise the people that work tirelessly behind the scenes to elevate them to the pinnacle of sporting achievement. The exercise physiologists; sport psychologists; sport nutritionists; the strength and conditioning coaches; the physiotherapists and the doctors. The unsung heroes. Together, led by the coach as their captain, work to drive the athlete to new heights. This is the Multidisciplinary Team. In 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) updated the Olympic motto to read: “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter” (Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together). Then-IOC president Bach stated that only together can we truly achieve something bigger. Reaching such heights is not a result of guesswork. It is the result of the sum of the collective experience of the members within the multidisciplinary team backed by scientifically proven methods. Athletic excellence is never the result of one factor alone, rather, it is the seamless integration of multiple systems working together to achieve excellence. Within this multidisciplinary team, each expert brings a unique skill set to the table, ensuring that no aspect of an athlete’s preparation is left to chance. From physical conditioning to mental resilience, from nutrition to injury prevention, these professionals work in unison to optimise performance. Understanding how the human body responds to training, fatigue, and recovery is critical for optimising performance. Exercise physiologists assess an athlete’s cardiovascular and muscular endurance, ensuring that they are training at the right intensity without overtraining or increasing their risk of injury. Using V̇O2max tests and lactate threshold test assessments, exercise physiologists can provide valuable insights that help shape training programs to be specifically tailored to the individual needs. Strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches play a vital role in enhancing an athlete’s performance attributes. Power, speed, agility, endurance and flexibility are all areas where S&C coaches tap into to improve performance. Programs designed by S&C coaches go beyond the traditional gym programs as they focus on sport-specific movement training, injury prevention exercises and recovery techniques. By refining biomechanics and movement efficiency, S&C coaches reduce the risk of injury and help athletes maintain their peak physical condition throughout their careers. Sporting success is not just about physical ability. Some say that sport is 80% mental and 20% physical. Pressure, anxiety, self-doubt, and high expectations can affect even the most talented athletes. If an athlete is not mentally prepared to handle the pressures of competition, the athlete would be set up for a challenging task ahead. Sports psychologists equip athletes with mental resilience strategies that will help them face any challenges that come their way in the lead up to or on competition day. Athletes are trained to visualize success, manage stress, and develop coping strategies that allow them to remain composed under pressure. A high-performing engine cannot function efficiently without the right fuel. Sports nutritionists develop customized, sport-specific meal plans that align with an athlete’s preferences and beliefs. They ensure a precise balance of macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals to optimize energy levels during competition, maintain hydration throughout intense training cycles, and accelerate muscle recovery between sessions. By tailoring nutrition strategies to an athlete’s unique demands, they help enhance endurance, strength, and overall performance, ensuring the body is primed for peak athletic success At the Maltese Olympic Committee, we recognize that athletic greatness is not achieved alone. It is the result of a carefully structured support system where scientific expertise, training strategies, and medical care work hand in hand to bring out the best in every competitor. That is why we are committed to offering athletes access to sports psychologists, nutritionists, strength & conditioning coaches and exercise physiologists. Our goal is to ensure that our athletes are equipped with the best resources, knowledge, and support to train smarter, recover faster, and perform at their highest level. Success in sport is not just about winning medals – it is about safeguarding the long-term well-being and careers of our athletes. It is about providing them with the right foundation to excel sustainably, push boundaries, and inspire the next generation. Because true greatness is never achieved alone. It is built together.
