As a member of the Royal Malta Junior Golf Academy, I’ve always harboured one goal: to compete at the highest level possible. For me, that meant reaching the pinnacle of professional golf and carving out a spot for myself on an elite tour. However, the road to that dream has not been a straight line – and in many ways, the detours have played a vital role in shaping the player and person I am today. A Dream Begins at Pebble Beach At 15, I found myself glued to the screen, eyes fixed on the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. The sights and sounds of the tournament resonated deeply with me. I admired the skill, composure, and precision of the players on display, and a thought I had always carried in the back of my mind began to crystallise: the road to professional golf was an incredibly long one. At that moment, I realised that while playing professional golf was my ultimate goal, getting there wouldn’t be a linear journey. But something else caught my attention. The possibility of playing collegiate golf suddenly seemed within my reach. The idea of competing at the collegiate level felt like a tangible stepping stone toward my ultimate aspiration. It wasn’t just about playing professional golf anymore – it was about taking the next step in my career and using it as a foundation for greater things to come. A Change of Course: From Division 2 to Division 1 Fast forward six years, and here I am, halfway through my senior year at the University of South Carolina. The journey I’ve undertaken has been nothing short of transformative, and it fills me with pride to reflect on every part of it. My college career began at Young Harris College, an NCAA Division 2 school nestled in the North Georgia mountains – a far cry from the grandeur of top-tier collegiate athletics. But despite its size, Young Harris provided me with invaluable memories and opportunities, including a standout achievement that I’ll always cherish: being named ‘Freshman of the Year’ in my Peach Belt conference in 2022. That honor marked the beginning of a new chapter in my collegiate career. I took the next step by transferring to the University of South Carolina, joining the Southeastern Conference (SEC) – widely considered the pinnacle of college athletics. The transition from Division 2 to Division 1 was monumental. The resources, the facilities, the elite coaching – everything seemed designed to help me grow and thrive as a player. It was a dream come true, and it was the perfect environment to refine my skills and push myself to new heights. The Highs and Lows: Triumphs and Challenges Along the Way Over the past few years as a student-athlete at USC, I’ve been fortunate to experience some incredible results, including multiple top-five finishes both individually and as part of the team. These successes stand out as some of the happiest moments of my life. But what has truly shaped me as a player and person are the challenges I’ve faced along the way. Leaving home at 17 to attend a university I had never visited was an emotional hurdle. The uncertainties of moving to a new place – far from the familiarity of my home country Malta – were daunting. Then there were the physical setbacks: injuries that took time and patience to recover from. The unexpected and sudden death of my coach took an emotional toll – losing someone who had been a mentor and guiding presence in my journey was an incredibly difficult chapter. These struggles tested my resilience and determination, but I can now say that they were integral to my growth. Collegiate golf, as rewarding as it can be, is not for everyone: It’s a grind, both physically and mentally. It’s about discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance – and through it all, I’ve learned that it’s not just the victories that matter, but the way you respond to setbacks. The lessons I’ve learned on and off the course will stay with me long after my college days are behind me. A Dream Realised: The Power of Perseverance Looking back, collegiate golf has been so much more than just a sport. It has been a test of my character, a journey that has pushed me beyond my limits and forced me to confront challenges that I never thought I’d face. And despite the difficulties, I would never trade the experiences and the relationships I’ve built along the way. The road to professional golf remains a long one. There are still hurdles to overcome, and the future holds many uncertainties. But I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have played collegiate golf at the highest level, and I approach the final stretch of my college career with excitement and anticipation. I am deeply thankful for the support I’ve received throughout this journey, from my teammates and coaches to my family and friends. I also want to express my gratitude to the Malta Golf Association and the Government of Malta for granting me a Sports Scholarship, which has been invaluable in helping me pursue my dreams. As I look ahead to the next chapter, I know one thing for sure: while the dream of professional golf may still be a long way off, the journey has already taught me more than I could have ever imagined – and that, in itself, is a victory worth celebrating. Collegiate golf is more than just a stepping stone to professional success. It’s a journey of growth, resilience, and perseverance. And for me, every challenge has only made the dream of playing at the highest level even more rewarding. As my senior year comes to a close, I know that the lessons I’ve learned, the friends I’ve made, and the experiences I’ve had will stay with me forever, no matter where my journey takes me next.
