Francesca Curmi and Jared Micallef Named Flag Bearers for GSSE 2025 Opening Ceremony

Francesca Curmi (Tennis) and Jared Micallef (Athletics) have been selected as Malta’s flag bearers for the Opening Ceremony of the forthcoming Games of the Small States of Europe, taking place in Andorra from the 27th to the 31st May.

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for 22:00 on Monday 26th May at the Estadi Nacional. In line with international practice now adopted for all major Games, Malta will be represented by both a male and a female athlete as flag bearers—promoting equality and inclusion on the international stage.

Francesca Curmi, Malta’s top-ranked tennis player, has achieved a series of historic milestones in her career. As a junior, she reached a career-high World Junior Ranking of 52 and competed in all four Junior Grand Slams, memorably reaching the doubles semi-finals at the 2019 Australian Open Juniors. On the professional circuit, Francesca made her WTA main draw debut at the Palermo Ladies Open in July 2023 and has secured three singles and two doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. She earned Malta’s first tennis medal—a silver in women’s doubles—at the 2022 Mediterranean Games. With a current WTA ranking of 367 and a career-high of 299, Francesca also holds an impressive 19-8 record representing Malta in the Fed Cup. As she continues her rise in 2025, her goal remains clear: to break further into the world stage and qualify for Grand Slam events, all while inspiring Malta’s future tennis talents.

Jared Micallef is Malta’s national record holder in the 800m and 1500m events, and one of the country’s leading middle-distance runners. A multiple gold medallist at the Games of the Small States of Europe, National Championships, and the 2024 CSSE Championships, Jared has also represented Malta at the European Championships and European Team Championships. Known for his aggressive racing style and creative presence on the track, he divides his time between Australia and Europe. Jared’s selection as Team Malta’s Flag Bearer at the GSSE 2025 reflects not only his athletic excellence but also his commitment to inspiring the next generation of Maltese athletes.
