The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) officially kicked off on Monday evening with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at the Andorra National Stadium, setting the stage for a memorable week of competition.

Team Malta, made up of 108 athletes, will join around 1,000 competitors from nine Small States of Europe to take part in 12 sporting disciplines, with events running through to Saturday, 31 May. This edition also marks the 40th anniversary of the inaugural GSSE, held in San Marino in 1985.

The Opening Ceremony was a vibrant celebration of Andorran history and culture. In attendance were European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Spyros Capralos, Prime Minister of the Principality of Andorra Xavier Espot Zamora, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, and IOC members.

The ceremony featured performances inspired by Andorran folklore, including the Tamarros—legendary forest guardians—and the Water Women, mythical beings believed to inhabit lakes, waterfalls, and forest springs. The Games Cauldron was lit by two renowned Andorran athletes who will be competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Leading Team Malta in the athletes’ parade were flag bearers Francesca Curmi (Tennis) and Jared Micallef (Athletics).

The GSSE were officially declared open by the Co-Prince of Andorra, the Bishop of Seu d’Urgell.

EOC President Spyros Capralos underscored the significance of the Games in the European sporting landscape, highlighting the pathway they offer for athletes aiming to compete at the European Games and Olympic Games.

IOC President Thomas Bach praised the GSSE for the vital platform it provides to athletes and National Olympic Committees (NOCs).

“It is with deep emotion and gratitude that I thank you all for the warmth and friendship you have shown me at every edition of these Games,” said President Bach, attending the GSSE for the final time as IOC President.

Team Malta begins its competition this morning at 09:00, with athletes in action across several disciplines including 3×3 Basketball, Artistic Gymnastics, Cycling, Karate—making its GSSE debut—Swimming, Shooting, Table Tennis, and Tennis.
