About Matthew Abela
Matthew Abela is a badminton player who represented Malta at the 2020 Summer Olympics, becoming the first badminton player from the country to compete at the Games.
He began playing badminton at age 5 and has since won multiple national titles, including six men’s singles and one mixed doubles title. Abela has also competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and secured a gold medal in men’s doubles at the 2024 South Africa International. He is affiliated with the Paola badminton club and has trained at Badminton Europe’s Centre of Excellence in Denmark.
