The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) brought together representatives from over 30 affiliated sporting Federations and Associations for a morning of insightful discussions and knowledge sharing. The seminar opened with an informative session on the procedure for financial claims submissions, delivered by the MOC’s Accounts Executive Elaine Catania and Director of Finance Jo’Anne Cassar. The presentation offered valuable guidance on streamlining the submission process, clarifying documentation requirements, and ensuring compliance with financial protocols — all aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency in the funding process for national sports federations. This was followed by a presentation on The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Malta, led by the Award’s National Director Adrian Farrugia, the objective of which is to encourage sporting organisations to entice their members to join the Award which works towards developing young people’s confidence, skills, and sense of responsibility through volunteering, physical activity, skill-building, and adventure.  A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two organisations to foster closer collaboration in the near future. MOC Secretary General Kevin Azzopardi went on to present the findings of a recent survey conducted among national federations, shedding light on current trends and areas for improvement. From this survey,  it emerged that over the past three years substantial progress has been registered by national federations in ensuring a higher level of good governance by having statutory clauses specifically related to safeguarding, gender quotas as well as sport integrity related issues. While the number of qualified coaches in local sport has increased, it was determined that the number of female participants and administrators remains relatively low though gradually this trend seems to be on the mend through the junior ranks. A series of engaging case studies followed, with federations sharing good practices in governance and development. Speakers included Karl Izzo (Aquatic Sports Association of Malta), Jan Karl Farrugia (Malta Tennis and Padel Federation), Anna Vassallo (Malta Taekwondo Association), and Chris Munz (Malta Baseball and Softball Association). “Today’s seminar was a strong example of the collaborative spirit of our sporting community,” said Julian Pace Bonello, Maltese Olympic Committee President. “By sharing knowledge, challenges, and successes, we are fostering a stronger, more unified sporting ecosystem — one that continues to grow through good governance, transparency, and shared vision.”
