Joanna Jane Agius, born on 25 June 1958, is a pioneering Maltese archer who made history as the first woman to represent Malta at the Olympic Games. She competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics, Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, and Seoul 1988, participating in the women’s individual archery events. Although she did not progress beyond the qualification rounds in any of the Games, her consistent presence on the Olympic stage marked a significant milestone for Maltese sport. At the 1988 Olympics, she also had the honour of serving as Malta’s flagbearer during the opening ceremony. Beyond archery, Agius extended her involvement in sport by coaching Malta’s seven-a-side football team at the 2009 Special Olympics European tournament, underlining her dedication to promoting athletics across different disciplines.
