About John Tabone

John Tabone is a former Maltese swimmer who specialised in individual medley events. During his career, he held 12 of Malta’s 17 national records and over 40 age group records. He represented Malta at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, competing in the 400m individual medley thanks to a Universality place from FINA. He finished his heat in a time of 4:53.12, placing 45th overall, which was slower than his previous best of 4:48.36 set at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, where he had placed 15th overall in the B final.

Known locally as Jon Jon, Tabone was named Malta’s Swimmer of the Year six times. In 1995, he became the first Maltese swimmer to receive an International Olympic Committee scholarship, training at the prestigious Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida.

After retiring from competitive swimming, Tabone made a strong comeback at the 2018 European Masters Championships in Slovenia. Competing in the 50m butterfly at the age of 38, he clocked a time of 28.74, finishing 6th in his age group (1980 category) and 16th out of 52 in the 35–39 age group.

At the 2022 European Masters Championships in Rome, competing in the 40–44 age group, Tabone swam the 50m butterfly in 27.89 and the 50m breaststroke in 32.32. He placed 11th out of 46 in the butterfly and 10th out of 40 in the breaststroke. In the 1980 birth year category, he finished 3rd and 2nd respectively — both performances were National Masters records.
