About Nestor Jacono

Nestor Jacono was a sprinter who represented Malta in the 1948 London Summer Olympics. While studying at St Edward’s College in the 1930s, he became unbeaten in the 100-yard race at both school and national levels, winning several championships. After finishing his studies, he remained Malta’s top sprinter and set a national record. In 1948, he was chosen to represent Malta at the London Summer Olympics, where he ran in the men’s 100 metres. Although he came last in his heat and did not advance to the next round, he was proud to have taken part. After retiring from competition, he founded the Pegasus Club to help schoolchildren get involved in sport and was active in Maltese sports organisations, including the Maltese Olympic Committee. In 2005, he was inducted into the Maltese Olympic Committee Hall of Fame for his contribution to sport. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 89 and was Malta’s oldest living Olympian at the time.
