Within the Maltese Olympic Committee’s (MOC) network, thousands of athletes, volunteers, and supporters contribute to Malta’s sporting landscape. In alignment with the International Olympic Committee’s Sustainability Strategy, the MOC will be giving increased attention to sustainability within its operations and events. Recognising that progress must be both practical and achievable, the MOC aims to begin with quick wins that can be implemented within available resources, while gradually developing a broader framework that promotes environmental responsibility across its affiliated federations. The long-term goal is to reduce the MOC’s environmental footprint and to educate and encourage federations to adopt similar practices — from event organisation and travel planning to facility management and community engagement.

As the global climate crisis deepens, sports organisations must act to minimise their impact while maintaining operational efficiency. By embracing eco-friendly practices, the MOC demonstrates leadership and commitment to protecting resources for future generations. By embedding sustainability in its activities, the MOC can inspire athletes, federations, and supporters across Malta to make more responsible choices in their daily lives.

Practical Steps Forward

Eco-Friendly Practices While not all federations control their own facilities, the MOC will encourage those that do to adopt simple measures such as energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction, and responsible water use. Reducing Waste and Carbon Footprint The MOC will promote initiatives like banning single-use plastics, introducing recycling points, prioritising digital over printed materials, and encouraging shared transport options to reduce emissions. Catering partners will also be encouraged to use locally sourced ingredients, reduce packaging, and offer sustainable menu choices. Engaging Athletes and Partners Athletes, as public role models, will be invited to champion sustainability initiatives and help raise awareness. The MOC also aims to collaborate with sponsors who share its commitment to environmental responsibility, opting for recyclable banners, reusable materials, and digital event communication wherever possible.
