Malta competed in the 1972 Munich Summer Olympic Games with cyclists Louis Bezzina, John Magri, Joseph Said, and Alfred Tonna, and shooter Joseph Grech. Peppi Grech served as Opening Ceremony flag bearer and L. Bezzina was Chef de Mission. These Games were overshadowed by the tragic attack on Israeli athletes, causing a temporary suspension of competition.
