The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Malta sent a six-athlete delegation across five sports, selected through Tripartite Commission invitations and universality places. Returning Olympians Eleanor Bezzina (shooting) and Andrew Chetcuti (swimming) were joined by debutants Sasha Gatt (swimming), Carla Scicluna (athletics), Matthew Abela (badminton), and Yazmin Zammit Stevens (weightlifting). This marked Malta’s first Olympic participation in badminton and the first Maltese female Olympic weightlifter. Eleanor Bezzina and Andrew Chetcuti served as joint Opening Ceremony flag bearers, in the first year the Games allowed male and female flag bearers.
