The Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation (MAWF) was established in 1969 by Comm. Simon A. Bonello, who introduced freestyle wrestling to Malta in 1967. The Federation gained affiliation with the International Amateur Wrestling Federation in 1970 and became a founding member of the Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling Federation in 1985. Maltese wrestlers have participated in two Olympic Games, three Mediterranean Games, three Commonwealth Games, and four European Small States Championships. Domestically, the MAWF organizes annual national club and individual championships.
