Baseball in Malta began in 1980 when Dr. Fredericks, an American physician, introduced softball to students at Stella Maris College in Gzira. As interest grew, he transitioned to teaching baseball at the Marsa Sports Complex, utilizing equipment borrowed from Verdala International School. Initially, participants were primarily Canadian and U.S. expatriates, but Maltese youths, especially those returning from abroad, soon joined. Notably, Patrick Pace, founder of the Mustangs Baseball Club, was among these early enthusiasts. In 1983, with assistance from the Federazione Italiana Baseball Softball, the Malta Baseball and Softball Association (MABS) was established and joined the Confederation of European Baseball. The inaugural championships took place in 1988 between two teams, the Mohawks and the Blue Max. Subsequently, Ray Bartolo founded a third team in Mellieha after being inspired by a visit to Detroit. In 2017, MABS expanded by introducing slow-pitch softball, promoting inclusivity and attracting a broader range of participants. A significant milestone occurred in 2022 when Shannon Galea pitched the first no-hitter for the Maltese Women’s Fastpitch National Team during the Women’s European Championship in Spain.
