Founded in 1964, the Malta Basketball Association (MBA) has been at the forefront of efforts to promote and increase the profile of the game of basketball in Malta, from grassroots initiatives and the organisation of domestic competitions to coach education and the national teams. The MBA became affiliated with the Maltese Olympic Committee in October 1964 and organised the first national basketball championship in season 1966-67 with 10 teams taking part. Also in 1967, the MBA was recognised as an official member of FIBA. In 1988, the MBA moved its headquarters to Ta’ Qali, converting an old hangar into a basketball pavilion. Over the past decade, the MBA has significantly upgraded the level of its main facilities, transforming the basketball pavilion into a modern complex between 2015 and 2020 as well as constructing a training gym in Ta’ Qali. Throughout the years, the Malta men and women’s national teams have been competing regularly in international FIBA tournaments at senior, Under 18 and Under 16 level and in the Games of the Small States of Europe, winning several gold medals.
