The Malta Tenpin Bowling Association (MTBA) was founded in 1975, following the opening of Malta’s first bowling centre, a 10-lane facility in Msida. The first singles national championship was held in 1976under the presidency of Mr. Julian Pace Bonello. Mr. Paul Baldacchino succeeded him in 2012, with Mr.Edward Mifsud currently leading the association. Team Malta has achieved significant international success, including victories in the team event at the Mediterranean Bowling Championships in 2005 and 2015. Sue Abela, Malta’s most decorated bowler, was crowned European Champion in 1997 and 2021 and holds the record for the most gold medals in Mediterranean Championship history. We also have Nicholas Muscat who won 3 medals in the European Youth Championships, while Mark Spiteri was crowned European Senior Champion in 2020. Based at the 20-lane Eden Superbowl in St. Julian’s, the MTBA has over 100 active members competing in various leagues and tournaments. Malta also hosts two key international events annually: the Malta Open in June and the Malta Seniors Open in October. In 2022 the Association changed its name to Malta Bowling Association, following advice from the European Bowling Federation which also dropped this ‘Tenpin’ from its name.
