The Malta Chess Association was officially founded in 1923, building on earlier chess activity dating back to the late 19th century. Erin Serracino-Inglott was instrumental in forming the Association by expanding the chess community, leading to the first official national championship in 1924/25 and Malta’s first Congress in 1926. Oscar Serracino-Inglott became the first national champion, while international interest grew with visits from renowned players such as Richard Réti, Jacques Mieses, and World Champion Alexander Alekhine. These early years laid a strong foundation for organized chess in Malta and paved the way for future international involvement.
