The Malta Cricket Association was established following the departure of British forces in 1972, which marked the transition of cricket administration into Maltese hands. Though cricket had been played in Malta since 1800, with early matches involving sailors from Lord Nelson’s fleet, it was only in 1998 that Malta became an Affiliate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), officially recognizing its national governing body for the sport.
