The Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU), established in 1991, is the recognised governing body for Rugby in Malta. Its mission is to promote and develop the sport at all levels, from grassroots to high-performance, both locally and internationally. Rugby in Malta experienced a revival in 1982 with the introduction of domestic club competitions and matches against international teams visiting via naval ships. In 2000, the MRFU joined the International Rugby Board, now World Rugby, marking a turning point for Maltese rugby, including its first participation in Rugby World Cup preliminaries. Over the years, the sport has grown with the establishment of the League, now known as the Malta Rugby Championship, the MRFU Cup and the Women’s Sevens League. The MRFU remains focused on expanding local competitions, improving facilities, developing a competent workforce and fostering a welcoming rugby community. It also aims to enhance Malta’s presence in international competitions, striving for success on and off the field.
