Established in 2021, the Malta Taekwondo Association (MTA) marked a new era for the sport in Malta. Under the guidance of Mr William Beck, former Deputy President of the Maltese Olympic Committee, the MTA transitioned smoothly, becoming the sole governing body for Taekwondo in Malta. It is recognised by World Taekwondo, and affiliated with the European Taekwondo Union, the Maltese Olympic Committee, SportMalta, and the Commission for Voluntary Organisations. The MTA oversees three clubs and prioritises athlete development through rigorous training, Black Belt gradings by foreign Grand Masters, and monthly test matches. Taekwondo is taught in nine major schools, including the University of Malta and Junior College. The MTA is part of World Taekwondo’s Humanitarian Foundation, helping disadvantaged youth access the sport. Led by President Anna Vassallo—ETU’s first female Vice President—the MTA has hosted major events like the 2022 European Cadet Championships, with local athletes consistently medalling internationally, including European Champion titles.
