The Malta Weightlifting Association (MWA) was founded in 1975 and officially recognised by the International Weightlifting Federation during the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. Since then, the MWA has played a vital role in developing weightlifting in Malta, offering athletes and officials valuable international exposure. Through focused youth development programmes, the association has nurtured a new generation of talent, resulting in unprecedented international success for Maltese weightlifters. Notable achievements include Tenishia Thornton winning the 2022 IWF Youth World and EWF Youth European Championships and becoming the 2024 EWF Junior European Champion. Kim Camilleri Lagana also claimed the 2022 EWF U15 European Championship title and finished as Runner-Up at the 2024 EWF Junior European Championships. These successes mark the highest-ever international results for Malta in the sport, underlining the MWA’s effective commitment to excellence and long-term athlete development.
