With one day to go before the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, preparations are in full swing, with the ground team on hand to ensure everything is in place for the athletes.

Several Team Malta athletes have already arrived, with the gymnastics, swimming, lawn bowls and para powerlifting contingents holding their first training sessions today.

Malta’s campaign gets underway tomorrow, just ahead of the Opening Ceremony, when sisters Connie and Rebecca Rixon compete in the Women’s Pairs lawn bowls against India at 12:20hrs local time.

The Opening Ceremony takes place tomorrow at 8pm at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow. Malta’s flag will be carried by Commonwealth Games medallist and lawn bowler Connie Rixon, while para athlete Nick Mercieca, who is making his Games debut, will be the baton bearer.

“There is a positive atmosphere within the camp, and the athletes are eager to start competing,” said Chef de Mission Dr Lucienne Attard. “These Games mark a special milestone for Malta as we make our debut in para sport, and we are proud to be working alongside the Malta Paralympic Committee, who are here in Glasgow to support Nick throughout his campaign.”

Preparations have been ongoing for some time, and with a strong support team behind them, we are confident the athletes will give their all and do Malta proud.
